Tyler Coates: I am fifteen pages into ‘The Art of Fielding’ and I already have some problems with it.

tylercoates:

  1. I don’t know much about how colleges recruit athletes, but I am pretty sure that actual baseball players do not find high school seniors and get them enrolled.
  2. Having worked in university admissions, I am 100% certain that college baseball players who are freelancing as recruiters cannot call high schools and obtain transcripts.
  3. The kid shows up to the college on the first day alone with just two duffel bags and picks up his room assignment. I can live with the idea that the guy’s father doesn’t help him move in, but he didn’t get a letter saying where he would be living and who he would be living with? And he didn’t bring, like, stuff other than clothes and one book about baseball? No.

Chad Harbach went to college. Did he forget how it worked?

Tyler, nice to meet you. You seem like an okay person. I like those videos you make with that girl. LOL right? Anyway, I am writing because this type of criticism is not okay or helpful or good! LOL right?

Fielding is a flawed book in lots of ways—we could talk about where the women be at (??) or the ending (!!) or how Affenlight seems to just wake up one morning and be gay (?!), and those would be legitimate concerns—but what you’re doing here is so clearly a predetermined, rejection of The Popular Conversation Piece Novel Du Jour for antagonism’s sake that I can see the boogers lodged in your unturned nose through the internet.

These problems you have, they could maybe amount to something later on, but Fielding is a 528 page novel, you have admitted to reading 2.8% of it. Let’s maybe slow down on the opinion blogging and speed up on the thinking about things blogging.
